I am interested in how biological complexity has come about, partly due to a limited number of major transtitions in individuality and inheritance systems. “The Major Transitions in Evolution”, published with John Maynard Smith in 1995 has resulted in a paradigm shift. Now I am writing a book to resynthesize the relevant knowledge that has accumulated in the past decades.
More conceretly, I continue working on questions on the origin of life, the immune system and natural language.
Recently I have become very interested in how learning might help and evolution and vice versa in various ecological and individual systems.
